A Dictionary of Dunbarrios

Plain definitions first. Deeper roots where they help.

This is the working vocabulary for the product, the small-group practice, and the longer experiment around it.

The Dictionary is optional deep reading. Nobody should need it to understand the homepage or use DunbarrioSolo—and no definition here outranks what people learn together in practice.

01

Start here

The few definitions that make the rest of the vocabulary easier to place.

Dunbarrios

A human-scale framework for small groups that repeatedly share responsibility, make decisions, resolve friction, remember what happened, and improve how they function together.

It begins with the dependence that is already present in households, care circles, small businesses, local teams, and other recurring groups, then asks how that dependence can work more deliberately without turning into control.

DunbarrioSolo

The current doorway into Dunbarrios.

It begins privately and progressively introduces circles, shared responsibility, relational practice, and group structure. The private beginning matters, but it is not the limit of the larger framework.

Circle

A bounded small group sharing a context, relationship, responsibility, or recurring practice.

A circle is meant to remain small enough that membership still means something and that responsibilities, decisions, and sharing remain understandable to the people inside it.

Human scale

A design constraint favoring groups small enough that people, responsibilities, and governance can remain recognizable and legible.

The working range of 3–9 people for a direct circle and the roughly 150-person ceiling in the broader model are practical constraints, not magical natural laws or promises that every group below those numbers will work.

02

Relationship and private practice

Ways to notice a relational world before deciding what, if anything, should become shared.

Embrace

A private relational expression in DunbarrioSolo directed toward a person or relationship represented in the user’s relational world.

An Embrace helps give attention a name and a direction without making that reflection public by default.

Mascot / Transitional Object

A symbolic interface that can help a person move between private feeling and words they may later choose to share.

It is a reflective aid—not a person, therapist, or replacement for a relationship.

Today’s Gathering

A recurring DunbarrioSolo surface that brings part of the user’s relational world into present attention.

It keeps the day’s practice bounded rather than asking someone to hold every person, reflection, and responsibility in mind at once.

Weekly Weave

A periodic return to the broader pattern of a person’s private relational practice.

It supports reflection over time without turning activity into a score or report card.

Mutuality

A reciprocal relationship or recognition in which connection is not treated as one-way audience attention.

Inside a circle, people should be able to understand both what the group asks of them and what they can ask of it. Mutuality is a quality of the relationship, not a person score.

The Quiet Room

The private starting space in DunbarrioSolo: a place to reflect and notice one’s relational world before choosing any bounded sharing.

The Quiet Room is one part of DunbarrioSolo, not the whole product and not a substitute for contact with other people.

Repair Mode

CURRENT

A structured way to address relational friction when ordinary interaction is not enough.

The current app provides Repair as a mutual, two-account flow after the connection between those people has been accepted. It does not turn conflict into public content, a score, an engagement mechanic, or an automated verdict.

03

Work and learning

The vocabulary of doing recurring work, keeping useful history, and improving the next attempt.

Task

CURRENT

A bounded unit of work.

A Task may stand alone or appear as part of a larger Routine. Shared Tasks are currently available after a circle graduates.

Routine

CURRENT

A repeatable shared practice.

A Routine can be as ordinary as changing towels, as relational as a recurring check-in, or as operational as a weekly client handoff.

Graduated circles can currently create, activate, edit, version, import, and export Routines.

Sprint

CURRENT

A short operating window that makes current work and responsibility visible without silently redefining the underlying Routines.

Sprint boards are current graduated-circle surfaces. Their assignment, rotation, and coordination mechanics continue to be refined.

Ledger

CURRENT

The personal running record of Embraces and smaller acts of connection recorded in DunbarrioSolo.

Circle routine completion and version history are kept on graduated-circle shared-work surfaces. Governance decisions are kept with circle governance; they are not combined into one group Ledger.

Library

CURRENT

The current place where reusable Routine packs can be retained for an eligible circle.

Routine packs can be kept private, shared through an unlisted link, and imported into an eligible circle. A user-facing public submission path is not currently available.

Blueprint

LONGER-TERM DIRECTION

A reusable description of a procedure or way of working that can be adopted, tested, and refined rather than recreated from scratch.

A Blueprint describes a practice. It is not the same as demonstrated capability, and first-class Blueprints are not tracked in the current app.

Workshop

IN DESIGN / BEING TESTED

A proposed future refinement layer where repeated practice could inform reviewable changes to reusable Routines, Tasks, and Blueprints.

The Workshop is being explored as a way to keep improvement explicit rather than silently rewriting live shared work. It is not a complete shipped workflow.

Revision Request

IN DESIGN / BEING TESTED

An explicit, reviewable suggestion to change a reusable procedure because practice revealed something worth improving.

This is a design concept rather than a currently tracked normal-user workflow. It is not a silent edit, an automatic penalty, or a judgment of the person making the request.

Collective procedural learning

LONGER-TERM DIRECTION

Groups should get better at doing things together every time they do them.

The longer-term goal is for repeated practice to create reviewable learning that can improve a procedure and help it survive role rotation and individual memory. The complete loop is not currently shipped.

Collective procedural memory

LONGER-TERM DIRECTION

A group’s retained ability to know how to do something across time, role changes, and individual turnover.

It is not merely stored documentation. It is the combination of usable procedure, situated experience, and the group’s capacity to carry the practice forward.

Collective procedural memory is a longer-term design goal rather than a complete current product workflow.

04

Governance and roles

How a circle makes structural decisions and holds responsibility without assuming a permanent manager.

Operator

The default member role.

An Operator participates in the circle’s work, relationships, feedback, and governance without holding the current Coordinator or Link responsibility.

Coordinator

CURRENT

A rotating internal coordination responsibility that helps keep shared work visible, balanced, unblocked, and moving.

Coordinator surfaces appear after a circle graduates and has enough connected participants to rotate roles.

A Coordinator is not a permanent manager.

Placement

CURRENT

An owner-managed way to order and compose the recorded members of a circle using Solfège positions.

The current feature helps a circle owner arrange the member view. It is not an authoritative governance position.

Placement is not a role, rank, score, or judgment of the person.

Role

A bounded responsibility held on behalf of a circle.

A Role is not a permanent identity or rank. It can be made explicit, learned, handed on, and examined by the people affected by it.

Role rotation

The practice of moving bounded responsibilities between members so capability and authority do not become unnecessarily concentrated.

Rotation does not require every responsibility to move on the same schedule; it makes the path for handing responsibility on visible.

Governance

CURRENT

The explicit process by which a circle handles structural decisions rather than burying them inside routine administration.

The current Governance surface becomes available after mutual connections are established.

Governance keeps changes to shared structure visible to the group and leaves interpretation with people rather than an automatic score or sanction.

Proposal

CURRENT

A visible suggestion for structural change that can move through the circle’s governance process.

Not every Proposal is required to use the same voting mechanism.

Graduation

CURRENT

The governed transition that opens a circle’s shared-work, Coordinator, and Link surfaces.

Graduation becomes available once a circle has enough connected participants and the required agreement. It is a current progressive transition rather than the starting state for a new circle.

Mitosis

IN DESIGN / BEING TESTED

When a direct circle grows beyond a workable human-scale size, it can split into smaller viable circles while preserving continuity where appropriate.

Mitosis is a structural response to growth, not a rule about personal departure. Implementation details around split history, Ledger inheritance, and weak or dissolving halves may continue to evolve.

People remain free to leave. Leaving a circle is not mitosis.

05

Stewardship and support

A developing attempt to make voluntary support dependable without allowing support to purchase control.

Steward

A financially capable participant who may contribute disproportionately to shared infrastructure while remaining a member subject to the same bounded governance.

A Steward stands inside the community rather than owning it from outside. Financial contribution does not create a separate source of permanent authority.

Stewardship

IN DESIGN / BEING TESTED

A developing model in which a financially capable participant helps make support dependable while standing inside the bounded community rather than purchasing control over it.

Different people may contribute different kinds and amounts of surplus while membership remains membership. Stewardship is a model and direction, not an implemented financial product.

Voice

A member’s meaningful ability to question decisions, participate, and disagree while remaining inside the group.

Support should not be made conditional on agreement with the person providing it, and financial dependence should not become a private veto over another member’s voice.

Contribution versus authority

The design principle that contributing more money, labor, expertise, attention, or other surplus does not automatically grant permanent governance power.

Paying more should not mean governing more.

06

LONGER-TERM DIRECTION

Federation and resilience

Longer-term directions for connecting small units without moving every decision into one giant center.

Knowledge Tree

IN DESIGN / BEING TESTED

A circle’s evolving description of what it can offer, what it is trying to learn, and where useful exchange with other circles may exist.

Graduated circles already expose Knowledge Tree placements and adjacency machinery. The Link helps keep this representation current so eligible nearby circles can identify relevant exchange without collapsing into one centralized group.

The long-term ambition is for claims of capability to become increasingly grounded in demonstrated practice rather than self-description alone.

Federation

IN DESIGN / BEING TESTED

Connection among bounded circles or Dunbarrios that permits exchange without centralizing every decision.

Graduated, listed circles already expose federation machinery. A populated, resilient federated ecosystem remains a longer-term direction.

Useful practices, knowledge, and assistance may travel while authority remains bounded close to the people affected.

Mobility

LONGER-TERM DIRECTION

The longer-term ability to move into another viable circle or Dunbarrio when a local arrangement no longer works without losing the wider network.

Mobility matters when voice inside a local arrangement is no longer enough.

Redundancy

LONGER-TERM DIRECTION

A longer-term system property in which one Steward’s, Circle’s, or Dunbarrio’s departure causes reorganization rather than collapse or exclusion.

Redundancy is resilience against concentrated dependence. It is not a score assigned to a participant.

07

IDEAS / ARCHIVE

Ideas and historical vocabulary

Earlier metaphors, coined language, and adjacent work that helped form the project. These entries offer context and character; they do not describe current product behavior.

Words Create Worlds

Naming is not only labeling; a new word can make a pattern easier to notice, question, and practice together.

Dunbarrios has always used language as a working surface. Its terms should remain open to revision when the practice becomes clearer than the name.

Compassionism

An early philosophical attempt to understand consciousness and care as emerging through genuine entanglement between beings.

A Wrinkle, not a Big Bang

A metaphor for change that arrives through folds in existing life rather than one totalizing rupture.

The Femtosecond Now — Editors in Chief

An earlier meditation on attention, witnessing, and the vanishing scale of the present moment.

Ectolution

A coined term for the long movement of human cognition outward into tools, institutions, and artificial systems.

The Atmospheric Commons

A reflection on the literal permeability between bodies and the shared atmosphere that makes separation less complete than it feels.

The Ontos of a New Reality

An earlier philosophical reference to eternity, presence, care, mystery, life, and death in the work of Terence McKenna.

Consensus Reality is a Handshake

A metaphor for the repeated interpersonal work of agreeing what happened without requiring either person to disappear into the other’s account.

No Kings, No Billionaires

An earlier political slogan about the structural danger of concentrated authority and accumulation.

With Circles against the Pyramid

An earlier contrast between structures that distribute participation and structures that concentrate it at an apex.

Audience Member One

A maker’s private discipline of recognizing when a piece of work feels settled before an external audience supplies its verdict.

A working surface, not a monument.

These terms can be edited, split, merged, or retired as the practice becomes clearer. The point is not to defend the vocabulary. The point is to make the work more understandable.
